The rhizome follows moisture and the path of least resistance, so a leaking or aged drain is vulnerable while an intact modern one generally is not. This is the same opportunistic behaviour it shows at tarmac and structures: it takes advantage of an existing weakness rather than boring through good material.

How does it get into a drain?
