What is on-site relocation?

At SE Knotweed, on-site relocation, also called cell burial or bunding, moves the knotweed-contaminated soil to another part of the same plot and seals it in a lined cell rather than paying to send it to a licensed tip.

How does the burial cell work?

We excavate the stand, then form a cell lined on the base and sides with a certified root-barrier membrane, place the contaminated soil inside, and either cap it under at least 2 metres of clean soil or fully encapsulate it in the membrane at a shallower depth.

The cell is positioned away from services, drains and boundaries, and its location and depth are recorded on a site plan kept with the property.

When is on-site relocation suitable?

On-site relocation suits sites with enough room to bury the soil away from foundations, drains and the boundary, and where the client wants to avoid the gate fees of off-site disposal. It is common on development plots and larger gardens.

On a small garden with no spare ground, excavation and disposal or a herbicide programme usually fits better, which we confirm at survey.
